Is Your PC or Laptop Ready for Modern Gaming?

With big open-world and graphically demanding titles on the horizon in 2026 — GTA VI among them, though it currently has no confirmed PC release, it's a PS5/Xbox Series X/S exclusive — a lot of PC and laptop owners are wondering the same thing: is my current setup actually the problem, and if so, which part?

This isn't a guide about any one game's requirements. It's a diagnostic: find out what's genuinely limiting your setup before you spend money on an upgrade that won't fix it.

What's actually limiting your setup?

Match your symptom below to what's usually really going on — and what people buy instead that doesn't help.

Low FPS / stuttering in demanding games

Usually caused by:
GPU-bound, or a CPU bottleneck if FPS doesn't scale with lower graphics settings
What actually helps:
Confirm which one first (see below) — then a GPU upgrade, or in rarer cases a CPU/platform upgrade
Common mistake:
Buying more RAM. Extra RAM doesn't fix a GPU or CPU that's simply too slow for the settings you want.

Game won't launch or crashes on a laptop with only integrated graphics

Usually caused by:
No dedicated GPU at all — integrated graphics aren't built for modern AAA titles
What actually helps:
An eGPU only if your exact laptop supports genuine PCIe tunnelling (see the eGPU guide) — otherwise a different PC
Common mistake:
Assuming any USB-C port on the laptop means an eGPU will work. It usually doesn't — see below.

Game installs are constantly full / deleting games to fit new ones

Usually caused by:
Storage capacity, not speed
What actually helps:
A larger internal drive if there's a free M.2 slot, or a fast external SSD as a genuine, honest fix
Common mistake:
Buying a faster SSD when the real problem is capacity, not speed — a fast small drive fills up just as fast.

Laptop gets hot and slows down mid-session

Usually caused by:
Thermal throttling — the chip is real, but it's downclocking itself to stay safe
What actually helps:
Better airflow (elevate the laptop, clean the vents), reapplying thermal paste on older machines, or a cooling pad for modest gains
Common mistake:
Expecting a cooling pad to unlock desktop-level performance. It reduces throttling; it doesn't add hardware capability that isn't there.

Rubber-banding / disconnects in online modes

Usually caused by:
Often Wi-Fi congestion or ISP routing, not raw bandwidth
What actually helps:
A wired Ethernet connection first — it's free and fixes more of these issues than any router upgrade
Common mistake:
Buying an expensive "gaming router" to fix ping. Latency and jitter are mostly about congestion, distance from the router, and your ISP's routing — not a marketing label.

Laptop with no dedicated GPU (or a weak one)?

This is the single question we get asked about most, and it deserves its own full breakdown: whether an external GPU (eGPU) can actually fix it, or whether your specific laptop simply can't support one no matter what you buy.

CPU or GPU — which one is actually holding you back?

A quick, free way to check: lower your in-game resolution and graphics settings significantly.

  • If your FPS goes up a lot → your GPU was the bottleneck. A GPU upgrade (or eGPU, if genuinely compatible) is the lever that matters.
  • If your FPS barely changes → your CPU (or RAM, or storage speed feeding the CPU) is the bottleneck. A new GPU alone won't fix this.

On a laptop, a CPU upgrade usually isn't possible at all — it's soldered to the motherboard. If your CPU is the real limitation, an eGPU or new graphics card won't solve it; a new machine is the honest answer.

Storage: capacity vs speed

Modern AAA installs commonly run 80-150GB+ each, so running out of space is common and easy to fix honestly: a larger internal drive (if your laptop has a free M.2 slot) or a fast external SSD both genuinely solve a capacity problem. Neither one turns a weak GPU into a fast one — storage and graphics performance are unrelated.

If your laptop's storage is soldered and full, and you don't have a spare high-bandwidth port for a fast external drive, that's a real hardware ceiling — not something an accessory fixes.

Should you upgrade, or replace the whole machine?

As a rough rule of thumb worth checking before spending anything: if two or more of (GPU, CPU, RAM, storage, cooling) are all genuinely limiting, the cost of fixing them piecemeal — especially with an eGPU setup, which is rarely cheap — often approaches or exceeds the cost of a new laptop or desktop that has none of those bottlenecks at all.

A single, clear bottleneck (just storage, or just an aging GPU in a desktop with a free PCIe slot) is a much better candidate for a targeted upgrade than a laptop that's limited on every front at once.
